Great Escapes: Europe
This updated European guide by Angelika Taschen uncovers some of the continent’s most beautiful and character-filled places to stay, from a 150-year-old Portuguese estate to Budsjord, the last stop on one of the world’s loneliest pilgrimage routes, set on the edge of Dovrefjell National Park in Norway. Blending postcard-ready photography with practical details such as directions, contact information, and reading recommendations, the book explores ancient wonders, great world capitals, and tiny towns with unforgettable charm across the world’s second-smallest continent.
Travelling through Europe’s rich tapestry of cultures, artistic masterpieces, architectural marvels, and striking natural landscapes, Taschen presents a carefully curated selection of unique hotels and atmospheric guesthouses chosen for their breathtaking settings and distinctive interiors. Highlights include Der Seehof, an idyllic lakeside retreat in Austria where guests can fish for their own dinner, and the historic Portuguese estate renovated by Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura, which still operates as a working farm. A true treasure trove of travel inspiration, each featured stay invites readers into serene, style-filled spaces where everyday life melts away.

About The Author
Edited by Angelika Taschen, who studied art history and German literature in Heidelberg and earned her doctorate in 1986, this work reflects decades of expertise built since joining TASCHEN in 1987, where she has published numerous titles on art, architecture, photography, design, travel, and lifestyle. The texts are by Shelley-Maree Cassidy, a writer and marketing specialist who has authored two books on hotels and contributed travel articles to various magazines and journals, drawing on a deep personal connection to hospitality through her great-grandparents, owners of some of the first hotels in New Zealand, where she lives.
Brand
TASCHEN began in 1980 as Benedikt Taschen’s small comic bookstore in Cologne and has grown into one of the world’s leading art-book publishers, celebrated for its dazzling, boldly designed volumes across art, architecture, photography, fashion, design, and pop culture. From pocket-sized books that helped democratize visual culture to SUMO-scale Collector’s Editions, TASCHEN remains committed to diversity, innovation, and treating every subject—whether a $10 title or a $10,000 masterpiece—with equal respect and craftsmanship.
Working closely with acclaimed creatives, the privately owned publisher has released thousands of titles in dozens of languages and now operates globally through an e-commerce site, international distribution network, and 12 flagship stores from Beverly Hills to Hong Kong. With teams spanning cultures, generations, and creative disciplines, TASCHEN fosters a down-to-earth, collaborative spirit while continuing to shape books that feel less like publications and more like immersive, museum-worthy experiences.
