How to survive Mercury Retrograde in 2022

Has communication been difficult? Have your travel plans gone array? Has your technology stopped working? You should check to see if it is mercury retrograde.

We find that mercury retrograde is a term that many of us have heard but few have really investigated. Three to four times a year, the smallest planet in our solar system enters into retrograde motion. From an astronomic perspective it means that Mercury appears to be moving backwards when viewed from earth. From an astrological perspective it has an entirely different meaning.

So what is Mercury Retrograde?

Similar to its namesake, the Roman messenger god, in astrology, Mercury is the planet of communication as well as intellect + relationships (both platonically + romantically).

These periods of mercury retrograde are often filled with confusion, difficulty, and unnecessary delays. “Think undelivered love letters, email blunders, and frazzled travel plans!” says the The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

Communication overall is more difficult, relationships may go through a rough patch, technology often doesn’t work and travel is a challenge.

Romantic relationships that spark during Mercury retrograde often won’t last in the long run. As celebrity astrologer, Ferdie Pacheco warns, “I’ve seen 10,000 relationships look wonderful (during mercury retrograde) and then after the retrograde they go down in flames.”

Is it always negative?

Although Mercury Retrograde is typically thought of as entirely negative, it does have some positive aspects. Many of these 'mishaps' caused by mercury retrograde are opportunities in disguise. It’s a time during which we are able to be much more relaxed, more introspective, and not as rushed, using the time to be present. “This is an excellent time to reflect on the past…intuition is high during these periods. Coincidences can be extraordinary.” Says The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
