The Gourmand's Lemon: A Collection of Stories and Recipes
In the second volume of TASCHEN’s best-selling collaboration with The Gourmand, the humble lemon becomes a lens through which food, art, history, and literature brilliantly converge. This vibrant exploration traces the citrus fruit’s rich legacy—from its Renaissance prestige and ties to the Medici dynasty to its roles in medicine, secret communication, and even organized crime. Along the way, The Gourmand uncovers the lemon’s surprising cultural depth, from its symbolism in works by Joan Didion, Fitzgerald, Wolfe, and Joyce to its embodiment of the American dream through the iconic lemonade stand.
A longtime muse for artists, the lemon shines in still lifes by the Old Masters and in modern interpretations by Picasso, Matisse, and Warhol. Its influence extends to design and the decorative arts, inspiring Philippe Starck’s Juicy Salif, the classic Jif Lemon, Arts and Crafts wallpapers, mythological ceramics, and even the inner circles of the Bloomsbury Group.
Featuring a foreword by chef and food writer Simon Hopkinson, an introduction by art critic Jennifer Higgie, and more than 60 lemon-forward recipes photographed by Bobby Doherty, this volume offers a zesty, globe-spanning celebration of the king of citrus—where culinary creativity and artistic ingenuity meet.
