Brand
Started in 1998 with one master weaver, two restored antique looms, and an old barn, South African-based Mungo produces beautifully designed homeware textiles, woven with care for the community and environment. Their mission is to create heirloom-quality woven goods with integrity in an open and transparent manner.
They have since grown to a team of more than 100, fulfilling their dream of building their own mill near the barn where they had their humble beginnings. The Mungo Mill is a testament to their philosophy of transparency in the production process, with the entire mill open to the public—still featuring their original antique looms. And in 2020, they became South Africa’s first GOTS-certified textile weaving mill.
Worldwide, textile manufacturing often prioritizes profit, resulting in lower yarn quality, reduced worker pay, and poor working conditions. Mungo defies this trend by maintaining high standards of sustainable production, using quality natural fibers, and ethical practices to create textiles that stand the test of time. They hope that understanding the origin and craftsmanship of a product fosters appreciation and encourages conscious purchasing decisions.
