Rattan
Rattan furnishings evoke the glamour and relaxed elegance of exotic beach houses, sun-dappled verandas, and plant-filled garden rooms. In RATTAN: A World of Elegance and Charm, designer Lulu Lytle explores the enduring appeal of this sustainable tropical palm and its place in interior design.
The first book in decades devoted to the history and craftsmanship of rattan furniture, this beautifully illustrated volume traces rattan’s versatility through archival images of iconic interiors—from Madeleine Castaing’s winter garden in Paris and Michael Taylor’s Californian beach house to the Titanic’s Café Parisian and Billy Baldwin’s celebrated New York projects. Rattan’s many expressions are revealed across settings ranging from Impressionist paintings and glamorous nightclubs to refined contemporary interiors.
The book also highlights highly collectible antique and modern rattan pieces by influential designers, while showcasing tastemakers and interiors that have cemented rattan’s timeless status in decorative arts.
