Basquiat: The Iconic Works
This essential volume brings together Jean-Michel Basquiat’s most powerful and influential works, published in conjunction with a major exhibition at the Brant Foundation in Manhattan. Returning Basquiat’s art to its East Village origins, the book places his work in the neighborhood that shaped his creative identity and cultural impact. Curated by leading Basquiat scholar Dieter Buchhart, the volume presents one hundred key works that reflect the artist’s relentless engagement with race, power, police brutality, and social inequality, alongside recurring influences such as jazz, anatomy, sports, literature, and the African diaspora. The book revisits three pivotal early exhibitions that defined Basquiat’s rise, while also offering the most thorough examination to date of his innovative stretcher bar paintings. With rigorous scholarship and striking visuals, this publication delivers a clear, authoritative assessment of Basquiat’s enduring legacy as one of the most important artists of the twentieth century.
