Summer Solstice

New Beginnings

Today, we celebrate the Summer Solstice. It is a magical day, when the Sun reaches it’s apex in the sky and the day is at its longest, the night, its shortest.

The Solstice, also referred to as Midsummer, has been honored and celebrated by many cultures throughout time: the Pagans, the Greeks, the Romans, the Vikings, even modern day cultures. (Though Scandinavia seems to celebrate their “Midsommer” on June 23rd!)

The Summer solstice happens to be one of my favorite days of the year. I divide it into a personal moment and a public celebration.

On a personal level, I find time in the morning to think, meditate, and have some private time. I reflect mindfully, considering the preceding 6 months: what I have achieved, what is new, what I need to let go of, what I need to embrace.

For me, it has become increasingly important to have these interim check-in’s, as we are so often living in the moment, responding to daily requests, daily needs, weekly projects, work obligations, friends + family. Not all are negative… however, we don’t always have the time to consciously consider if we are still heading in the right direction, the direction we choose to set.

After meditating and consciously letting go of that which does not serve me, I walk barefoot in the cool summer grass of morning, grounding my fresh purpose and renewed intentions, admiring the day as the sun rises in the sky.

The longest day offers an ideal opportunity to take stock, seek clarity, freshen our focus, clear the windscreen, and make any necessary adjustments as we continue to navigate our lives and ourselves. (Oh so much easier than New Year’s Eve as the Summer Solstice has no expectations or obligations attached!)

Just as personal but far more public, the summer solstice is a perfect evening to host a summer dinner with friends and family and enjoy the abundance of the season’s foods, fruits, and flowers! The evening is sweet and warm, the sunset late and lingering. What better way to celebrate this great annual event than over a fabulous dinner with friends and family, whatever your preferred mode of entertaining.

Tabletop setting

I often choose to serve dishes that are equally enjoyed hot or room temperature so that one may graze through the long evening hours, happy amongst good company, enabling me to prepare things in advance and be able to sit at the table with everyone, enjoying the “l’heur bleu” and a glass of wine.

However you choose to celebrate the day, I send many wishes to you for a wonderful Summer Solstice!!
