An LA-based ceramicist, Mirena Kim's work bridges the gap between craft and art. After searching fruitlessly for a simple, ceramic vase that she could vividly picture in her mind's eye, she decided to try her hand at pottery to see if she couldn't make it herself. She sat down at the wheel and was instantly captivated by the motion, speed, and emotional highs and lows of the process. Over the past 20 years, she has honed her craft, creating beautiful ceramic cylinders, often bowed and textured, that are simultaneously functional and true works of art.
Mirena believes in economy and simplicity, and that each thing should be useful, even in a purely visual way. As equally a part of the process as the clay or tools used to make her work, Mirena brings a kind of calm, discipline, and sense of purpose to every piece she makes.
