We had the chance to sit down with Kira Faiman to discuss her international background, the inspiration behind Von Gern Home, and how she plans to style her table this summer.
Tell us about your background and career. How has it shaped your style?
My passion for design started at an early age growing up with a mother who was an artist and a father who was an architect. My family always encouraged me to explore and develop my creative side in various ways. Growing up, my weekends consisted of art classes and trips to museums. I rebelled against my artistic background by majoring in economics and working in finance. After a successful career on Wall Street for over 15 years, I decided to pivot and return to my roots by getting a Masters Degree in History of Design & Decorative Arts from Parsons. I guess my parents were right that design was in my DNA!
My personal aesthetic unites the heritage of classic European traditions with the dynamic spirit of modern American design. It blends timeless elegance with unexpected eclectic elements. I delight in harmonizing diverse colors and textures, drawing inspiration from an array of artistic movements spanning from Bauhau to Art Deco, and the lavishness of 18 th -century France. Having lived in four countries (the US, the UK, Monte Carlo and Russia) and extensively travelled the world, I have also been deeply influenced by global cultures and soaked in diverse aesthetic references.
How did Von Gern Home come to be? What made you want to start it?
During a career on Wall Street, I found my creative outlet in hosting and entertaining friends and family. The table became an outlet for my creativity and personality to shine, and a place to enjoy beautiful design. This passion for entertaining lead to the creation of Von Gern Home with an aim to promote the joy of table styling and to offer tools to create stylish tablescapes for everyone.
Where did the name 'Von Gern Home' come from?
The brand is named after my paternal grandmother, Zina Von Gern, a Russo-German aristocrat who lost everything in the Russian Revolution – except her devotion to a finely set table, come what may. That dedication to the art of living has been a constant inspiration and a driving force for me.
Where does the inspiration come from for your designs?
I look for beauty everywhere and try to bring it home. The shapes and textures of art and architecture inspire my designs. The silhouettes at fashion shows and the details of artisanal crafts also find a voice in my designs. Travel and culture are always my inspiration, whether it’s the earth tones and animal prints on an African safari, the vibrant colors in a Moroccan souk, the peaceful minimalism of a Japanese temple, or the indulgence of dining al fresco on the Italian coast.
What inspired your most recent collection of vibrant summer styles?
Having spent a decade living on the French Riviera, I fell in love with the region’s joie de vivre, vibrant colors, captivating scents, and tantalizing flavors. My latest collection draws inspiration from the Mediterranean seaside, reflecting its lively spirit, idyllic beauty, and coastal charm. The blight yellows, blues, and citrus-infused hues pay homage to the terraced gardens basking in the coastal sunlight, capturing the essence of azure waters, winding roads, scenic beaches, and sun-kissed landscapes.
We know you're a lover of high fashion. How does the fashion world impact your design choices—if at all?
Fashion has been a passion of mine for a long time. I’ve been fortunate to cultivate friendships with designers, frequent fashion shows and keep a keen eye on evolving trends. I deeply admire the meticulous craftsmanship of haute couture, which I strive to infuse into my own creations. I draw inspiration from contemporary silhouettes and color combinations and try to weave elements of current fashion into my designs. For example, as an ode to the timeless elegance of Coco Chanel, I designed Coco Placemats, inspired by the designer’s iconic style.
How has your aesthetic/designs transitioned over the years?
My aesthetic has evolved significantly over the years, reflecting changing trends and my personal growth. Initially focused on traditional, classic European style, I have embraced a more modern and eclectic approach to design, incorporating bold colors, contemporary patterns, and unexpected textures. I expanded my offerings to include playful and practical children’s placemats and a collection of multi-functional lacquer boxes in vibrant colors and geometric patterns. I am currently researching new materials and production techniques that are emerging with the rapid advancement of technology.
What are your go-to pieces at the moment for hosting?
I have a penchant for versatile, meticulously crafted pieces when hosting. Among my favorites are elegant table linens paired with Von Gern Home placemats, and striking dinnerware showcasing unconventional shapes or bold patterns. I elevate the table setting with contemporary glassware and infuse a touch of glamour with metallic accents like gold or brass flatware, whimsical napkin rings, and an abundance of candles to create a flattering, romantic ambiance. While I adore fresh flowers, I opt for a sustainable approach to centerpiece design, using fresh branches, potted herbs, and an array of fruits creatively arranged along the table's center, or colorful candies scattered playfully. To strike a balance between refinement and practicality, I incorporate my high gloss lacquer trays for serving drinks and snacks, completing the polished look.
What is your go-to meal to serve when hosting in the spring/summer season?
I lean towards light, fresh dishes that celebrate the flavors of the season. It might be a vibrant salad of farm-fresh vegetables, accompanied by grilled seafood or chicken. I might also opt for bruschetta topped with ripe tomatoes and basil, or a refreshing gazpacho soup served in elegant glassware. For dessert, I might offer a fruit-forward creation.
What advice would you give to someone who's overwhelmed by the art of styling a table?
Remember these things to avoid overwhelm:
- Decide on a theme or a feeling you want to evoke in your guests.
- Find one inspiration piece, such as a textile, a plate, a pretty branch, that can help you visualize the potential of how the table could look.
- Take your time so you are not making rushed decisions, especially while juggling food preparation and other last-minute tasks. I often set the table the night before or first thing in the morning.
- Lastly, remember that nothing is permanent. If you don’t like it, you can change it.
What's your go-to hostess gift?
My favorite hostess gift is a set of Von Gern Home coasters, available in beaded, lacquer, or shell designs to suit any style. I might pair them with a chic lacquer tray, perfect for holding knick-knacks or snacks. Excitingly, I’m also crafting the first Von Gern Home candle, which will be another great gift option.
Who is your style icon?
Coco Chanel, whose pioneering timeless and elegant designs continue to influence modern style. I appreciate Chanel’s emphasis on simplicity, sophistication, and breaking traditional fashion norms.
What event (current or from history) would it be a dream to style the tables for?
I’d love to design the tables for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’s wedding.
What have you learned from creating your own business? What advice would you give to anyone looking to start their own business?
I've learned the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and attention to detail. My advice to anyone starting their own business is to stay true to your vision, never compromise on quality, and always prioritize customer satisfaction. Be prepared to work hard, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and surround yourself with a dedicated team who shares your passion and values.
What's your favorite place to travel to in the summer?
Definitely the South of France and the Amalfi Coast!
What is on your travel bucket list?
I’ve travelled extensively worldwide but haven’t had the chance to explore Latin America yet. I’m particularly keen on discovering places like Argentina, Brazil, and Chile.
